About six weeks ago I bought a pair of Vibram Five Fingers Speed. The very next weekend I wore them on two hikes around Interlaken. The first day I played it safe and switched from the VFF back to ‘normal’ hiking boots (inov-8 X-Talon 240. well they are more normal than the VFF). After day one basically everything from my knees downward hurt but in a good muscle ache way. After some stretching and a good nights sleep most of the pain was gone.

The next day went a lot better. Parts of the trail were covered with tree roots, others with rubble or rocks. On terrain like this every single step feels like a foot massage. Even after three or four hours of walking my feet still felt great in the evening. Better then many evenings when I was wearing ‘proper’ footwear.

After wearing the VFF a few times the next two weeks I felt my feet had enough time to adapt. I put them on the first time for running. The run was only 1 kilometer, but even this short distance was enough make me feel like a cripple the next morning. Every step made my Achilles tendon burn and it felt like someone was pushing a big needle into my knee. Stretching helped a little but my barefoot running technique was still awful and I had put a lot of stress on my knee.

Over the last four weeks I slowly increased my distance to 10km. The direct feedback the VFF provide helped me learn quickly to put less stress on my feet and knees. Since last week I am finally able to run the 10km without hurting knees the next morning.

Soon I stumbled over the X-Talon™ 240, according to Inov-8 the lightest hiking boots on the market.

I couldnt’t find a store close to Munich that had them in stock but thanks to outdoorseiten.net I got the phone number of the distributor for Germany. The service was just plain awesome. Because the X-Talon are pretty specialized boots most stores don’t stock them. But the distributor offered to ship me two different sizes to see if they fit.

I wore them for roughly 100km (tested in the Palatinate forest, a 2-day trip in the Black Forest, Brazil and the Alps) which should be enough to get to know the shoes.

Inov8 describes them as “Extreme lightweight boot. High levels of comfort and performance with an aggressive sticky rubber outsole make this shoe ideal for short trail, ultra light walking and mountain running with ankle protection.”

This is absolutely true. The shoes weight 255g (size 42) according to my scales which is roughly 1/3 of my “proper” leather hiking boots. Even while scrambling over loose gravel or polished limestone going up Kampenwand I felt save and in control. They are light years ahead of any running shoes which weight roughly the same. When talking to the distributor he warned me that the soft rubber outsole would wear out quickly, but this is something I can’t confirm yet. After roughly 100km the soles still look like they new give or take a few scratches.

As you can see from the picture, there are many spikes coming out of the sole. These spikes combined with the soft sole feel like an acupuncture when walking on flat ground and it takes some time to get used to the different feel. Unlike the solid soles I was used to from my Meindl boots, this gives you a lot of feedback about the ground and my feet like it.

Enough praise, there is still one little thing I would like to change: the hideous color!

Summary: Highly recommended!

Update 2011:

After using the shoes for roughly 18 months, hiking at least 700 kilometers in them, wearing them for hiking on grass, rock, mud, snow and ice I’m still absolutely happy with the shoes. I even got used to the color, so my verdict hasn’t changed.

By now the spikes coming out of the soles have lost a lot of material and the top has a few holes in it. But they are by far the most comfortable boot I have ever used and I have bought a second pair to replace the first one.

Summary: Still highly recommended!

• Backofen auf kleinstmöglicher Einstellung vorheizen.
• Schuhe kurz in den Ofen stellen – dabei sollten die Schuhe auf keinen Fall zu heiß werden!
• Einen Schuh rausnehmen und einwachsen. Dabei ruhig mehr Wachs auftragen, als sofort einziehen kann. Den Schuh wieder in den Backofen stellen.
• Das selbe mit dem anderen Schuh wiederholen.
• Das Einwachsen solange wiederholen, bis das Leder kein Wachs mehr aufsaugt. Bei mir ist das normalerweise nach zweimal einwachsen der Fall, aber es hängt natürlich davon ab, wie stark man aufträgt.

Wie immer habe ich mir zuerst einen mässig teueren Schuh ausgesucht, der sonst meinen Ansprüchen genügt. Natürlich wurden mir sofort ein halbes duzend andere Schuhe zum Vergleich gebracht. Darunter war auch ein relativ teures, aber perfekt passendes Paar.

Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Verkäufern, war aber nicht Schluss, nachdem ich mich für einen teuren Schuh entschieden hatte. Herr Gulyas ignorieren aber zuerst mein “Die sind gut, die nehme ich.” mit “Aber des Paar müssen se noch probieren, des is’ sehr gut”. Und wie versprochen war es gut – besser als das vohrige und dazu noch mehr als 40 Euro billiger.

Deswegen gehe ich dort gerne einkaufen.

Geox Snake Men ~500g

Ich habe mir schon vor einigen Jahren ein paar Geox Snake gekauft. Die Schuhe waren relativ leicht, extrem bequem und sehr atmungsaktiv. Ich hatte nicht genau die verlinkten Geox, sondern welche ohne Schnürsenkel. Ich war mit den Schuhen sehr zufrieden, aber nach 2 Jahren sind sie mittlerweile auch auseinandergefallen.

Als Outdoor Schuhe waren sie aber nur bedingt zu gebrauchen, da die Membrane in der Sole etwas Wasser durchlässt. Ich hatte sie oft im Büro an und ich bin auf der Suche nach einem Ersatz, da es genau dieses Modell scheinbar nicht mehr gibt.

Nike Free ~450g

Auch schon vor ein paar Jahren habe ich mir zwei Paar Nike Free gekauft. Eines davon ist recht schnell auseinandergefallen aber das andere Paar habe ich immer noch im Einsatz. Die Schuhe waren schon als Backup (wenn ich die Stiefel ausziehen wollte) beim West Highland Way dabei. Super Schuhe, sehr bequem und schön leicht. Das Versprechen, daß es sich anfühlt wie Barfuß zu gehen, stimmt zwar meiner Meinung nach nicht ganz. Aber trotzdem werde ich mir auch hier ein neues Paar kaufen, wenn das aktuelle mal auseinanderfällt.

Inov8 X-Talon 240, ~500g

Wer ultra-leichte Wanderstiefel sucht, dem kann ich die Inov8 X-Talon 240 (Review in Englisch) nur wärmstens empfehlen.

Lizard Five Fingers, ~340g

Mein Favorit, nicht nur wegen dem geringen Gewicht und kleinen Packmaß, sind ganz klar die Lizard Five Fingers. Vor kurzem habe ich mir auch hier ein Paar gekauft. Es wurde schon viel über die Five Fingers geschrieben und ich will nicht alles wiederholen, deswegen nur kurz.

Zuerst fühlt es sich ungewohnt an, mit den VFF zu laufen. Aber das Gefühl verschwindet schnell. Im ‘normalen’ Leben sind die Schuhe sehr bequem und uneingeschränkt alltagstauglich.

Ich habe die Schuhe auch schon einige Kilometer abseits von festen Wegen in den Alpen getragen. Die dünnen Solen vermitteln ein viel besseres Gefühl über den Untergrund, das Gummi ist griffig. Selbst auf nassem Fels hat man immer noch Halt. Selbst auf Geröll hatte ich keine Probleme mit den VFF. Einzig meine ungeschützen Knöchel machen mir noch etwas Sorgen, aber ich vermute mal, ich gewöhne mich daran und höre dann auf, mir Sorgen zu machen

Nach etwas Eingewöhnung geht auch Joggen ganz gut.
